The Chinook fishing remains steady for this time of year, the occasional slow day but for the most part everyone is leaving limited out on their salmon catches. As expected in early August we have had some great fish landed and more of them released then kept, in the past four days we have put six Tyee back in the water between, 31 to 40.5 pounds. 40.5 being the leader so far for the August Catch and Release Derby. Best place still has been Borrowman Bay, the grinders who stay in the bay get their fish and good ones. Area 51 is starting to pick up as well for quantity catches, seems like on the flood tide the salmon are starting to feed pretty heavy and the bite is fast and furious, as soon as the tide changes…the fishing dies off. The Coho fishing is really light for this time of year, usually the fish are in thick at the top end of the islands but definitely are harder to find then in past years, you still usually limit on them but releasing 20-30 in a morning is just not happening anywhere in the sound. A great year up to this point, we are sitting in excess of 80 Tyee in the past 60 days, with the biggest so far sitting at 50. It feels like that big August blast of hogs is yet to arrive, and so we hope that happens, because the build up to this point has been fantastic. Ground fishing has been fairly sluggish due to huge tides, but overall has been not overly productive over past years. Definitely a trend of when Salmon fishing is at the top of it’s game, the bottom bouncing is definitely not. The crew are still catching good number of halibut off the pinnacle and Towner seems to be the best place lately for Ling catches.
